Lorian

I felt drained when I woke up the next morning; my body screamed at me as I tried to ease myself out of bed. The dreams came back in a sudden rush as though they were imprinted on the backs of my eyelids, playing on repeat. They had felt so real; it was as though I was living the incidents all over again. The most prominent was my recent attack, I knew that would forever haunt me. I was sure I wasn’t up too late but as I walked urging my stiff muscles to ease out of my small room and into the light kitchen to make tea, it was apparent everyone was up and about already.

“What time is it?” My voice was thick from sleep. I needed a hot cup of tea to soothe my sore throat.

“Just before seven. Don’t worry, you aren’t late.” Maria was already filling a large teapot with boiling water and there was freshly baked bread and cheese on the table. “I know how you hate being up late.”

“It wasn’t just a bad dream – you had been hexed, Lorian. I am sorry, I know this is all new to you and I can see you are scared, but trust me we have reversed it and are looking into how it happened.”

“But I had taken the medicine Neave said would help…”

“But if you were hexed, my bird, it wouldn’t have helped. I am sorry that it happened, but I promise we will find out why. We had to bathe the hex off you; that’s why you woke up in the bath.” Maria answered my unspoken question as she had so many times before. “This world isn’t just full of magic that helps people and creatures, there is evil here. You have seen it manifest in the form of those creatures and now, unfortunately, you have experienced it personally. Over the last three hundred years, things have grown a little more unstable. People more unstable, willing to harm one another without much thought.”

Hexed? But who would want to do that? We swiftly changed the subject as everyone filtered in from outside to have some breakfast and Neave left to set up the stall. Emerys and Maverick offered to
